Great Legal Advice For Not Getting Yourself In Trouble

Blog

If you are arrested for a crime or you have been accused of injuring someone, you will want to follow the exact same advice, whether you are guilty or innocent of what you are being charged with. Here are some things you want to make sure you do and some things you want to make sure you don't do if you find yourself being arrested for a crime:

Don't resist the arrest

The first thing that you can do right away that will help you to avoid more charges and to look better in court is to not resist the arrest. You want to make sure you follow all of the officer's instructions even if you disagree with why you are being placed under arrest.

Never apologize

Even something as a general apology can be taken as an admission of guilt. This is why you never want to apologize in any way when you are caught up in anything that may lead to a possible arrest. It can be turned against you in court.

Don't talk unless it's to ask for your attorney

The only talking you should be doing to the police after an arrest is to ask to call for your attorney. Never say anything else. Do not offer up any information and do not answer any questions. Also, don't sign anything without your attorney's approval.

Don't talk to anyone about your case when you are out

Once you are released from jail, either out on bail or on your own recognizance, you want to make absolutely sure that you don't talk to anyone about your case. You don't want to say anything to anyone that can end up legally harming yourself without even realizing that you are saying something that can be turned against you.

Conclusion

Anytime you are arrested you want to keep your composure. While it will be normal for you to be scared and very upset, you definitely don't want to let it lead to bad decisions that can cause you to make mistakes that can lead to you getting more time, or even lead to you doing time you may not have done in the first place had you handled things differently. When you talk to your lawyer, you want to work with them and seriously consider the advice that they give you. Even if you doubt what they are telling you, give it some serious thought, they are trained professionals who know much more about the way the court system than you do and you want to have trust in that. If you don't yet have a lawyer, visit law firms in your area, such as Charles P Dargo for the DeMotte area.

Introduction To Legal Defense: Criminal Defense Options

Growing up in a law enforcement family, I learned a lot about how arrests take place, what goes into investigations, and more. That gave me a really unique insight when it comes to criminal defense options and the areas where there may be vulnerabilities or loopholes that can be used in court. I've done a lot of research into the legalities of criminal defense as well, so it's allowed me to merge the two and create a site that offers a comprehensive look at criminal defense options and the court's expectations. It's always best to work with a lawyer, but having an understanding of the basics first will help.
